Welcome back, after quite a bit of an absence to what will now be a weekly feature in my blog section: the AnandTech Community Update.
We tried this once back in March, but this has been quite a busy year for our forums, so this project got pushed into the background a bit. Things are going a little more smoothly at this point and we are well on our way to transitioning to vBulletin away from FuseTalk. We've done some test runs and are cleaning up things for the move. We still don't have a firm ETA on that, but we are getting it done.
Anyway, our goal here is to compile a list of useful and interesting topics from our forums and collect them in one place. We want to bring readers of AnandTech.com and forum members closer together and provide a place for people to come and check out what's been going on. Without further ado, let's get to it.
One of the most exciting things happening in our new AnandTech Video Game Exchange thread. This is a hub that is heavily regulated to allow a central place for users to post what games they have / want. It is for all gaming devices (PC, consoles, handhelds, etc.). Many of the same rules apply here as do in our For Sale/Trade forum, and our moderators are keeping a keen eye on it. But allowing our members to trade games they have for games they want offers them a legal outlet to trying new games more easily.
While tough feedback can some times be tough to hear, we are always open to it. There is a thread in the General Hardware forum on the state of AnandTech and our articles. We are always evaluating the question of direction and coverage and it's you guys we are trying to please. Your feedback is invaluable and we are always checking the forums and listening. Anand even popped in there to mention that he shares some of the same sentiment of our readers.
Over in cases and cooling, we've seen some interesting talk about not only oil submerged cooling, but some other crazy custom cooling devices. The water block from the case project in the second post in that thread is simply insane. There is also a completely passive homemade system being discussed. It looks pretty cool if you ask me.
Our TeAm is near and dear to our hearts, crunching distributed computing projects at ridiculous speeds. AnandTech is very proud of all our crunchers so we would like to take a second to honor one of our fallen mates. Dustin, aka Amaroque, died earlier this year and we recently learned of it through his sister. In order to honor his memory, some of our members got together and crunched in his name for a day. It's not much, but they wanted to give him something like a distributed computing missing man formation. Hopefully it won't be necessary to do it again any time soon, but I think this type of gesture is well suited to fallen crunchers.
On a more uplifting note from distributed computing, we would like to congratulate SunnyD and Canai for winning a member initiated Docking@Home crunching contest. Obviously we'd also like to thank Fullmetal Chocobo for putting this contest on. Thanks, and merry crunching.
Discussions of the new Blackberry and T-Mobile's G1 with Google's Android are ongoing in our Gadgets Gear and Phones forum.
In motherboads, X58 is a hot topic, with the discussion about EVGA's X58 board being quite interesting.
I'm actually really surprised that there isn't more discussion of the AMD 4830 SP issue. Honestly, I would have thought that would be more interesting to people. But that shows what I know.

really like this. i have been looking for more info on X58 and nehalem related stuff, but for the life of me i seem to have totally spaced on the motherboard forums /facepalm. i think i have gone there twice since i started posting here regularly LOL. i should spend more time over there now. will check that thread out, im looking for more info on when to expect hydra 100 boards out lolAmberClad - Monday, October 27, 2008 - link

I like this. I never have time to look through the forums so posting some good threads up front will keep me more involved in the community.
